As mentioned in the first post technology is based around crystals, they give ships the lift and maneuverability necessary to soar through the open air, they light peoples homes, and are at the core of every weapon. Gunpowder is unheard of and in it's place people use weapons crystals of various kinds. The most commonly seen use of weapons crystals is in gauntlets. Gauntlet's are a lattice work of copper wiring that wraps around the users arm over a leather glove and holds the weapons crystal in the palm of the users hand. while aiming a gauntlet takes practice early novices are more inclined to fire them by accident as the gauntlet relies on the wielders mental commands. Every person reports a different feeling from crystals, for some it's a cold weight on their hand, for others a tingling sensation. Rapid and steady use of a gauntlet will cause it's wire cage to overheat and it's not unheard of for soldiers to be burned by their weapons after prolonged fights. Like with long guns and cannons though gauntlet fire is easily recognized by the white glowing orb of etheric power released along with the sharp cracking sound that often accompanies weapons crystals being activated. The next common use of weapons crystals is in long guns. while more accurate than a gauntlet long gus are expensive to maintain as they use more copper than their smaller cousins, Long guns are more destructive but rely on an attached tank of water to keep their copper coils from over heating and melting the weapon. although able to discharge more power than a gauntlet crystal and known to be more accurate few people use long guns outside of the military due to the need to learn to activate the crystal without touching it. Aboard ships aeronauts rely on massive weapons crystals for their cannons that are augmented by a set of focusing crystals built into the cannon's barrel. While still prone to overheating the crystals usually require a small crew of five men to aim and steady when firing as they are mounted on a pivoting ball bearing allowing skilled gunnery crews to aim in nearly any direction. Because of their improved strength the crystals used in cannons draw power not from the ether of the air but from a ships power crystal. The improved power though comes at a cost as they can easily explode with devastating results if hit by an enemy blast. Aboard ships crews lives depend on three sets of crystals- the main power crystal which draws in etheric power and converts it to electricity, the lift crystal which draws in power from the main power crystal and converts it into lift and then a series of trim crystals which allow the ship to turn and pivot around the lift crystal. larger ships often times have more than one power or lift crystal sacrificing mobility for more power and the ability to rise higher into the sky. Power crystals and lift crystals though now common on infrequently produced as the enormous vats in which they are grown can take centuries to produce a single crystal. Although nobody truly understands how the vats work as they were created long ago by the same people who built the spires each spire has at least one family that is dedicated to cultivating the crystals grown from them and has refined the practice to an art. In modern times the only ships owned privately are those that have been retired from military service as many spires have passed laws requiring all new power crystals be sold to their fleets. Power crystals though are extremely valuable not only for their ability to provide power to lift crystals but also because they provide the electricity necessary to use ether sails, and because they provide power to the ships shroud it's primary defense against other ships. Invisible to they naked eye a ships shroud will burst into an electrified net if hit with the condensed etheric energy of cannon fire and must be broken through before the ship itself can be damaged. The stronger a power crystal is the thicker and more protective a shroud can be. However a new power core is considered extremely inefficient gaining in efficiency over time and not truly being productive until it's had a few generations of use for it to change it's latticework of crystal routes to better channel etheric current into electricity.
