    Flirtatious Wanderings
The Wanderings of the Fox and the Rogue

A soft breeze blew through the streets of the sleeping town and provided the only sound that stirred in the empty common areas with the soft whistle of wind over stone. A lone figure walked slowly down the main street from just outside the town and approached its center at a relaxed pace. The breeze swept his crimson cloak to and fro giving the fine garment a life-like quality. Rath stopped in the center of the street and surveyed the stone buildings that surrounded him. It was late, but not too late. A tavern would be around there somewhere.

It had been almost a year since the events of the Haven where he had played a seemingly small role in the saving of the world. She had been there too, but he had missed his chance to talk to her. Why did he let her go again? His fingers curled into a fist as he glared at the moon above him before he went slack. There was no sense in getting upset about it now. He had a reason for being in this town.

A curved staircase to his right caught his eye and upon closer inspection he found that the place was lit up brightly inside and the faint sound of voices and music could be heard wafting outward from the building. It was just the kind of place he had been looking for. He quickly ascended the stairs and threw open the door. It was easy to tell the friendly places from the rough ones. No one glared at him when he entered, hell, no one even stopped to look. He was in a decent tavern this time. The rogue approached the bar, a redhead in the corner catching his eye as he moved, she looked familiar, but why? He shook his head slowly before ordering an ale from the barkeep and quickly downing half the frothy brew the instant it was placed before him. It had been a long day of travel.

(Sorry people, closed rp, just me and Kitsune for now. Will probably open it up later on after some character development.)

From her spot in the corner, arm draped casually over a dapper young gamblers shoulders, she had an excellent view of the door and most of the windows. She was always paranoid about crowds.

Giving the man under her arm a flirty smile, she blew seductively on the die he held out to her, and wished him luck. Men called her Lady Luck, because whoever she chose to champion, won. She had no idea why, but it was useful for nights when she had no money or food.

Blowing a kiss to him, she left the gambler to get them more drinks. A sway to her hips drew the attention of several men, a flick of her vibrant red hair gained her a few whistles. Really, men were so easy to manipulate.

"Another round of ale, darlin', if ya don't mind, and a whiskey for me." She cooed to the barkeep, her voice low. Next to her, a wanderer with a cloak as red as her hair caught her eye, and she winked. Picking up the tray the bartender set before her, she tossed the stranger a sly smile, and sashayed back to her men.

That wanderer... he reminded her of someone...

Rath quickly downed his ale after giving the red head a flash of his famous grin, unable to help himself in the presence of an attractive female that seemed interested. He shook his head as he sat the mug down on the bar before him and called for another ale. As he waited for his second ale his found themselves once again staring in the direction of the girl and the gamblers. Why did she look so familiar? He sipped at his fresh ale thoughtfully as his mind shifted through old memories. Perhaps she was someone he had met in the past. He nearly choked on his ale as he realized where he knew her from. The rogue turned back to the bar quickly, coughing fiercely as he placed the mug down upon the wood before he dropped it. "It's a small world," he nearly groaned the words.

He wasn't so much displeased to see her as he was afraid of what she might do if she recognized him. They had parted ways on good terms, but perhaps too good of terms. It had only lasted a few weeks so that explained his forgetfulness. But they were an eventful few weeks, to say the least. His mind slowly turned over and thoughts of Dain came up almost instantly. He glared at his ale sullenly before taking a large gulp of the cold liquid. His left hand produced a cigar and match from within his cloak. He deftly lifted the blunt to his lips and lit it, puffing the thick smoke slowly. The girl across the bar wasn't his enemy, but perhaps it would be a good idea to avoid her, least something he would regret happen.

Hours passed, while she mindlessly aided the drunken gamblers. With each win, her chosen man would pass her a shot of whiskey and a few coins, nothing substantial, but it would get her out of this godforsaken piss hole.

The barkeep nodded her direction, indicating he was cutting the men off, so she began hinting that it was time to go. After another hour, the five gamblers left the bar, and she breathed easy. The place was nearly empty, just a few stragglers left in corners, and the stranger with the crimson cloak at the bar.

She began cleaning up the cards and glasses, knowing the barkeep would slip her a few coins. Really, she had a good thing here, but she was itching to be on the road again, away from towns. She missed running free.

Setting the glass-laden tray on the bar, she nodded absently at the stranger. He was smoking a cigar, something she had noticed him doing through out the night. He still looked familiar to her, but she couldn't quite figure it out.

"Oi, Kit, get a move on, will ya, I wanna go home!" The bartender called, snapping her to attention. She blushed, and stammered an apology to the stranger; she had been staring at him.

She hurried away to gather more glasses and right upturned chairs, racking her memories. She was waving her goodbyes to the barkeep, a pouch of coins jingling at her breast, when it hit her, who the man was. He was finishing a glass of ale, eyes closed, enjoying the last taste.

Memories came flooding back, stunning her. Cold nights, curled by a fire, his arm around her. His face above her... Rath.

She left the bar, making her way to the edge of town. She needed to be away from him.

The bartenders call brought him out of his daze as he looked up from the mug in his hand to find her staring at him again. He offered her a soft smile before returning his attention to his ale. A cloud of dark smoke hung over his head as he puffed on his third cigar thoughtfully. It appeared she didn't recognize him so he was in the clear, but her presence still unsettled him. He finished his ale and let the mug come to rest just before the barkeep. A few gold coins scattered on the bar as he stood and thanked the man before exiting the building. He would need a place to sleep. It had been hours since he entered the tavern and he had lost count of the ales he had drank but it had been enough to make him dizzy. He staggered down the curving staircase and made his way down the first road he found in search of an inn. He didn't know this town so it was difficult to locate an inn, especially in his semi-drunken state.

She was nearly out of town, taking a short cut through a dark alley, when she heard footsteps behind her. Sighing, she pulled her cloak tighter around her shoulders, and sped up, hoping the feet belonged to some drunken sod.

She turned a corner, daring a glance over her shoulder. Two men followed her, and she thought she saw the shadows of three more. Damn them to hell and back. She wasn't carrying weapons. Concentrating, her fingers grew claws, and her teeth elongated to fangs. With luck, they would think her a demon, and leave.

With bad luck, she would have to change completely.

Growling low in her throat, she turned to face her potential attackers, and caught sight of a dark red cloak coming up a side street. Damn.

Rath stumbled until he found himself leaning against the wall of a darkened alley for support. He smiled dumbly at the cool stones that supported him and was happy for their cool touch upon his cheek. The sound of rough voices jeering brought him back to his senses and he pushed himself off the wall with ease. A dark, feminine silhouette caught his attention and he carefully approached it before noticing several figures approaching her from the front. He cursed softly and moved past her without stopping to look and see who it was. "Stand back," he said with a grin as he passed her. Something seemed familiar, but his dazed mind ignored it as he moved towards the men, broad-barreled revolver in hand.

"Hey, hey, get a load of this drunken ass!"
    "Someone wants to play hero."
"Look'it the bastard, can't even stand right!"
"He's got 'isshelf a nice gun der."
"It looks like a small cannon, hey toothpick, can ya even lift da damn thing?"

Rath grinned as he raised Lover faster than they could react. Six gunshots split the air and the weapons the men had been drawing clattered to the ground amidst cries of pain. He rushed forward and knocked the seventh man flat before turning and drunkenly throwing himself into the others. They attempted to batter him but even drunk the rogue was a damn good fighter. He took several hits himself, but refused to fall and was soon surrounded by the crumbled forms of six men. The seventh man scurried away and ran screaming from the alley. Rath teetered and fell against the wall with a laugh. Blood was streaming from his busted lip and he wiped at it with the back of his hand before turning to the woman he had saved.

"Sorry about that, you're safe now. You should probably avoid dark alleys and get on home." He peered into the darkness, but still couldn't make out who was standing there.

Sighing, she approached her savior, retracting her claws and teeth before he noticed. Keeping her face hidden by her hood, she dabbed at his bleeding lip with the sleeve of her gown. She felt the familiar tugging of her heart, and hardened herself against it. This man was nothing to her. Not anymore.

"You shouldn't have done that... Rath." She smiled, despite herself. His name fell from her lips in a whisper full of old feelings. "But I do thank you, you always seem to rescue me when I blindly walk into trouble."

Rath looked up at the mention of his name and the light touch at his bleeding lip. He shook his head with a hopeless smile as he spoke, "It's just a bad habit of mine, Kit. It always seems to get me into more trouble than ever though." He allowed himself a small smile, "but, I don't mind. Helping people seems to suit me just fine. How have you been all these years? It's been a while."

Lowering her arm and meeting his eyes, she wondered how she had failed to recognize him at first sight. He had haunted her dreams for nearly a year after they parted.

"About three years, time has flown, it seems. You've changed. I've been..." She thought about the past few years, and shook her head. "I've been the same. Nothing ever changes with me."

Looking around her, she sighed again. He probably had at least one wound to tend; he looked ready to fall over. Damn. She wanted to leave, not subject herself to his charming grins. Adopting her 'bar face', she gave him a shy smile, and took his arm. "Come on, let me take you home, so we can clean you up."

Rath grinned at her as he let himself come to stand on his feet without much effort. "I doubt that, people always change over time," he said as he moved to follow her. He didn't think going with her was a good idea, especially since he wasn't really injured, but he figured that there would be no harm in catching up after three years. If things became tense he could always leave. He turned to her curiously, "You live in this town?"

"Yes, not far from here, actually. Though, I had intended on leaving... Never mind. It's just three streets down." She tightened her grip on his left arm, trying not to think about touching him again. But, of course, in doing so, she thought about him...

Gasping, she stopped, and pulled the sleeve of his left arm up, staring at the flesh in the moonlight. "Rath! It seems you have changed more than I!"

Rath stopped when she tugged on his arm. He glanced down at the restored left arm with a slight grin. "Aye," he said proudly, "I went on an adventure not too long after we parted ways and found the Angel's Tear. It sounds like a tall tale, but it's true. I used it to restore my arm before giving it to a mercenary, head hunting friend of mine, if you can call him a friend." Rath laughed and shook his head. Sometimes he felt like Zyta was more a rival than a friend, but it was just the relationship they had.

Kit grinned, and patted the warm flesh. "I'm happy for you! Shame you didn't have this last time we met," she winked at him, pressing her chest into his bicep. Laughing, she smiled, and pulled him onward, toward her home.

"Friend, you say? It seems you have been busy these few years! The Angel's Tear... That is amazing, love."

Rath shook his head hopelessly as she made the comment about when they had last seen each other. The gun-arm did make things awkward, but it was also a great tool for avoiding a situation, most of the time. It hadn't worked on her and they had ended up together in the end. He wasn't going to lie and say it wasn't fun while it was happening, but he wasn't sure how she felt now. His heart had been torn when he had met her and he was having difficulty letting go of Rosalyn. His heart was still torn, but this time between Rosalyn and Dain. He felt bad for this woman who he had a sneaking suspicion had liked him. It was an issue he faced almost daily, though most of the time it's a simple case of affection. But with her... he felt something else from her.

"I'm surprised you believe me, most people don't even think the thing exists, let alone that I could have found it, but the arm doesn't lie. So you really haven't done anything in three years?"

She closed her mouth firmly, and let the silence hang. What had she done in three years? Not enough, and too much.

"I spent... Most of the past two years living in a forest, about a weeks journey from here. I was..." she lied, unsure how to explain without giving away her secrets. "I upset the wrong person, and needed to lay low." Thruthfully, she had been with her father, in the gods realm, attempting to access her magic. He didn't need to know that, though.

"I find it very easy to believe in the unbelievable. My father... used to tell me stories about the animal gods, and different human objects considered a myth," Another lie, her father, for all he loved her mother, hated humans. It had been Boone... Boone and his minions who filled her head with human lore, when she was 'guest' in his dungeon, fifty years ago.

"There's a shocker, a man you've upset? Couldn't count them all on all my fingers and toes," Rath said with a grin, knowing all too well the trouble this woman could get herself into. She had insisted back then that she didn't need an escort, but given the trouble she could cause everywhere she went, it didn't hurt to have the back up along. The rogue had the stories to prove it. A thought occurred to him that forced him to shake his head and laugh. She was almost as bad as him! If only those two could have seen it, oh how he could have shown them that it wasn't just him that caused trouble. His merriment didn't last long however, as her last words puzzled the rogue. "Human objects? You speak as if you aren't human yourself."

"I will have you know, I do not seek out trouble! It just... finds me. Same with men!" she defended herself sullenly. Her father told her the same thing, "You're looks cause you trouble, you should stay away from humans!" "I don't understand, it's not like I'm particularly pretty like this," she grumbled under her breath.

She desperately hoped to distract him from his question. How foolish of her to slip up! "Here we are! Home sweet home, wipe your feet and don't drip any blood on my carpet, rogue!" She bustled around, leaving him at the door of her modest apartment as she went to find first aid and a jug of whiskey.

Rath barely caught her grumbling but decided to leave it alone, simply shaking his head and smiling as he followed her. She didn't respond to his jest about her odd speech but instead lead the way directly into her apartment. He begrudgingly wiped his feet before entering but frowned as she warned him against bleeding on her carpet, "You know I'm not injured, right? One of those thugs managed to bust my lip with a lucky punch. Must have been all that ale I had at the tavern," he mumbled the last part with a sideways glance. His eyes traveled around the modest home of his old friend as his hands came to rest on his hips, sweeping the crimson cloak back and off his frame.

She came back out holding bandages, homemade medicine, and the jug of whiskey. Setting everything down, she took a long pull of the alcohol, not meeting his eyes. Her mind whirled with arguments, to tell him, to keep hiding. She hadn't known Rath long, but he was the only human she had connected with since coming to the mortal world.

Well, she could always kill him if she misjudged his trustworthiness. And maybe he could help her find something similar to the Angel's Tear, so she could regain her magic...

"Rath, why do you always save me? I don't need anyone's help. Everyone is always saving me, it's not my fault I attract trouble!" With each word, she grew louder, her voice wavering. She was angry, and wasn't entirely sure why. Her hands grew claws, and her teeth elongated into fangs.

Using her own version of his Quick Step, which she had seen several times on their travels, she appeared behind him, her claws at his throat. "Do you believe me now, Rath? I'm not what you assumed I am." Kissing his cheek, she vanished from his back, leaving four small scratches on his throat. She reappeared at the whiskey jug, and took another pull.
