Rath's earlier excitement had worn off in his silence as he considered the monumental task before them. Sure, he was an above average fighter because of his heritage, and Rislyn was basically a god now that the Gael had fixed her up, but their goal was to assault the realm of the gods and kill one of them. He had done many crazy things in his life and had traveled places people wouldn't believe, but he had never seen the realm of the gods. The ex-mercenary would need more info before he could formulate any plans.

"It's pretty much going to have to be that straight-forward, unfortunately," Rath's voice was more grave than he intended. He coughed softly before continuing in a lighter tone, "The question is, what can we expect when we get there? I've never been to such a place. I'm sure you know where to find him, but will he have protection? Will the other gods step in? Does he have underlings? And if he does, what kind of strength will they have?"

She rode in silence, pondering his questions. Finally, she spoke, her soft voice floating on the wind between them.

"The other gods will do nothing, the same as they did nothing all those years ago. Boone has waged enough war to hold his lands, and there is no law but his own. Where as my father, and other woodland deities work together, he considers himself above all that. Luckily, it also means that he has abandoned his villages. Remember what I told you about Names? Worshipers will forget you when you forsake them." She gave a slightly cruel chuckle, before moving on again. "The underlings will be humans he has kidnapped, easily persuaded to ignore us. I don't want to kill innocents, and you mustn't break your oath. The only ones to worry about are his whores. They will have been given bits of his power, and probably mine and Rhys's, too. They have been broken, and will fight us to their death. That will be my fight, while you free any prisoners he may have."

Rath listened to her words carefully, committing everything to memory as best he could. The mention of his oath brought a sting to his mind as he remembered why he had taken the oath in the first place. He and Doc had killed many men in their quest to take down the Gang and at the end of it all they were so bloody and worn that the rogue proposed the oath to the gunslinger. It wasn't that they could no longer spill blood, but the purpose of the pact was to prevent anymore lost lives. They reasoned that men as good at killing as they were should also be just as good at keeping their enemies alive. They had the self-control for it. He wasn't going to kill anyone in the god realm.

He offered his companion a confident grin just before spurring Firemouth onward even faster. His words were nearly lost in the rushing wind, but the meaning was clear, "Then it's settled, what are we waiting for?"

The pair traveled onwards, stopping only briefly to rest. The next afternoon, they approached the dimensional gateway between the worlds, though to Rath, it would have looked like just a couple of trees. Rislyn, and the horses, however, could feel the hum of energy around the area.

Rislyn dismounted from Rhonin, and laid her hand on his forehead, whispering a blessing over him. He twitched, and shook out his mane. "What was that?" he whinnied.

"It's a spell that will allow you both to enter my realm."
She moved over to Firemouth, repeating her blessing. Finally, she laid a hand on Rath's bare skin, and whispered the incantation, watching the magic flow from her flesh to his. This was the most contact they had had since Dain arrived.

"Let's camp here. Get rested up. We'll go through the portal at dawn." She stepped away, turning her back on him. Her tail swirled around her, covering her bare midriff as if she were cold. She paced away, claws slipping from her hands and her body slinking down, taking a hunters pose as she tracked a deer through the trees. The forest calmed her raging mind and hormones.

'Off limits. Dain's. You have a mission. Off limits. Dain's. Clear him from your mind. Remember Rhys waits for you.'

By the time she caught up to the buck, her mind was silent, her breathing even. She lunged, and brought down the beast with one attack. Hefting it over her shoulder, she carried it back to their small camp.

Rath regarded the trees curiously as he felt a sudden thrum of energy in the air as they approached. The pendant around his neck seemed to pulse, thudding with heat and life more the closer they got to the gate. When Rislyn cast her spell on him the tear-drop ruby flared briefly, casting a crimson glow upon his face before fading back to a warm pulse against his chest. He watched Rislyn curiously. Sometimes the rogue had to curse his intuition about women. Every twitch, the way she moved, even the way she wrapped her tail around her midsection (it was a new one, he would admit) gave away how she felt. He shook his head with a sigh and a soft smile as he watched her go hunting. He made to pull his cloak around him before stopping as he realized he was no longer wearing it. A tender smile broke across his lips as he remembered Dain riding away with the crimson fabric flowing in the wind. He rubbed his right arm gently with his left hand, trying to ward away a sudden chill.

By the time Rislyn returned with her game, Rath had built a sizable fire and set up a spit for whatever she might bring back. At the sight of the buck he glanced down at his now inadequate spit. He had built it for rabbits and other small game, not something as large as what she carried. "Well," he said as he started to upgrade the spit from simple sticks to sturdier logs about twice the width of his thumb. "I didn't expect something like that, but not to worry, I can improvise. Are you hungry?"

She nodded, and set about slicing the fur off the animal, carving the juiciest meat for them to feast on tonight.

"He walked right in front of me. Figured we can eat him tonight, and pack enough for several days of travel, eating well. We'll need our strength. Here, roast this. I'll go wash, and find vegetables."

She plopped a large pile of venison down on a rock beside Rath's spit, then stood, flowing through the trees with easy grace. Finding a creek, she washed her paws, then dug around in the earth for tubers and wild plants. Carrying an armful of the greens, she paused outside their camp to think a moment. So much had happened in only two days...

    "You're worrying too much, heartling."

Rislyn jumped, and whirled around, spilling her armload. "Gods above and around us, Rhys!"

The wraith laughed, "Not many can sneak up on you, I enjoy doing it. Why do you fret?"

She turned back to study Rath's profile through the trees."His mind is distracted. He focuses on Dain, when I need him here with me. I don't want him getting hurt because he wasn't paying attention."

"He'll be there for you when you need him."

"I'm sure he will. I would just rather go alone, than risk his life, and Dain's happiness..."

"You know, as well as I, that you wont go. You're too afraid of facing Boone alone, without someone believing in you to be your back up."

"Enough out of you. I liked you better when you didn't analyze me so much." She smiled back at him, softening her words.

"I never had need to analyze you before now. You've grown more complex. He'll be wondering where you are. Go back now."

She scoffed into the empty twilight, and stepped through the trees to Rath and the horses.

Rath nodded wordlessly as he took the meat she had left for him to cook and set up supporting it over the fire before he removed a small container from a pocket on his vest. The wonder spice, as he had called it when traveling with Doc was sprinkled lightly over the meat as he rotated it over the flames to ensure an even coating and cooking. By the time Rislyn returned a savory smell filled the air around the small camp and the meat was beginning to brown. After a few more minutes of cooking it would be darker and perfectly crispy. The rogue was many things, though most wouldn't give him credit as a decent cook, even so, he had proved his skills with fire many times and would once again do so this evening. Without thinking he pulled a cigar from a different pocket and a knife from his belt. He chipped away at one of the ends with his knife, opening the aged paper to allow air to flow through it before he dipped the other end into the open flames at his feet.

He inhaled the thick smoke the instant the paper touched his lips, releasing the surprisingly sweet smelling smog with a sigh as he sat back to stare at the sky. "The meat's almost ready, Rislyn," he said without turning from his work. Though his hearing was no where near as acute as the goddess' the rogue still prided himself on his ability to hear anyone approaching him from behind. If he didn't know any better, he would've guessed she was talking to someone too, but he knew there was no one else out there but them. Can't be right all the time, Condarrion, he told himself with a slight grin as he puffed on the cigar again.

Pulling herself together, the goddess sank to her knees beside him, and dropped her load to the ground. Swiftly wrapping the tubers and roots in leaves, she set them on a thin rock she'd found by the creek, and placed it near the fire to slowly roast.

"We rest and prepare tonight. Tomorrow, I guide you across the gate, and tomorrow evening, we'll stay with my family before beginning the journey across the countryside. It's about two days, with these horses. We'll then have three days to defeat Boone before part of my power will fade."

As she spoke the last line, she held up a palm full of pale flames. The fire danced up her skin and down her other arm, licking over her fur innocently, just as it had once upon a time, it seemed, at the inn after they'd made love. She blew the flame out, and clenched her fist tight. "I know I promised not to kill the innocent. But to me, anyone there is someone who knowingly harmed me, or Rhys; or at the very least, did nothing to save us. You can rescue prisoners. I plan to slaughter everything in my path."

She wrapped her tail around her body, and whispered into the fire, "And when this is done, I vow upon every drop of my magic, I'll never harm an innocent soul again."

Rath frowned slightly at he vow to slaughter those in her path, but he didn't speak against her. Instead, he said, "My vow, though a promise to save life where I could, doesn't mean I can enforce it on others. I wish you would spare those you could, but I won't try to stop you. I know what it's like to want them all dead, to want everyone involved with the destruction of everything you ever loved to suffer as you once did. Your final vow," his voice softened, "will be easier than anything you can imagine afterwards. It will worth every drop of that magic to keep it." He was quiet for several long moments before he looked away, tendrils of dark smoke poured slowly from the corners of his lips as he took another long pull on his cigar. "I'll save the ones I can while you fight," he said, "don't think I'll be leaving you by yourself though. If you get into trouble I'll come to your aid."

She lifted her head to meet his eyes. "If I get into trouble, let me worry about saving my tail, for once. I've a few abilities Boone doesn't know about, and no reservations. He wont know I've refined Quick Stepping, and... if I must, I can trigger Bloodrage. Nothing will survive my wrath, save those truly innocent."

Rhonin nickered softly behind them, and all was still save the cracking of the fire. In that silence, Rhys appeared again. The eyes of the gods locked. After several long moments, the wolf nodded, and disappeared. Rislyn choked back a sob, laid down on her blanket, and closed her eyes.

Rath only nodded in response before turning away from the goddess. He said nothing else on the subject because he felt there was nothing else he could say. They were going to enter the realm of the gods in the morning. He strange smile crept over his face. Never in a million years would he have ever thought attacking a god, in the realm of gods no less, would be something he would do, or even be capable of doing. It was strange to consider that many people still had doubts about gods and he was camping with the daughter of one, was about to go to their realm and meet her parents, and attack one. He would never be able to tell anyone and be believed either. Who would believe such a tale? He shook his head, inhaled the sweet smog of his cigar and moved away from the fire.

He didn't see Rhys or the exchange with his back turned. The rogue regarded the shortened blunt in his hand before flicking it over his shoulder into the fire. Soon, he told himself, he would find Dain again soon. Sleep didn't come to him easily, something unusual for him, but he dozed off after a while when he convinced himself he needed his rest to be ready for their journey.

The next morning, Rislyn awoke and quietly packed up their baggage. The meat would keep a day or so, it was well cooked, and in any event, they would spend that evening with her parents at their home. Rhonin nuzzled her as she walked past him.

    'You are afraid.'

"Of course I am. I cannot predict what will happen. I may be leading him to his death."

'You must trust your instinct when you are there,' Firemouth said, stepping up beside his son. 'You are every bit the animal we are, and our instincts are never wrong. Trust in that, and you will both be fine.'

Rislyn nodded, but did not offer a reply. She called to Rath to wake him as she walked into the forest around them. A mile away stood the Gate that would take them home. She needed to ward the area against strangers, and alter the magic to allow horses and man through.

Rath was awake before Rislyn's call, a knife held in his hand as he surveyed the small clearing the instant she had awoke and moved about the area. It was only when he realized it was just her that he sheathed the knife back inside a small slit in his bed roll. The concealed weapon had been there for many years and had been drawn countless times. Some times, it was difficult to control the warrior's instinct. He was up and dressed within moments, his leather vest and pouches draped just right over his chest, though the absence of his cloak left him feeling exposed. He didn't miss it, however, as he knew who carried it now and how much it meant to either party that she had it. Besides, the cloak had been a symbol, but now that it's meaning was gone it had to be given up. He prefered passed on to throwing it away. It meant too much to wind up trash.

His bed roll was attached to the saddle and Firemouth was given an affection pat as Rath moved around him, rechecking his gear and securing the leather seat his steed bore upon his back. He glanced up when Rislyn moved ahead and quickly followed after her. "So," He said as he came up beside her. "How exactly will this work? Us getting there, I mean."
