There are hundreds of major influencers in any universe. This thread is to help break down key players in the world. They are divided into several major groups. As they are created and thought up we will begin to place the boundries on them.

State powers- Those cities, groups of cities, nations and empires and their associated land holdings.

Religious powers- Every deity has influence over the world. Some are stronger some are weaker. Religious powers include deities, temples, shrines, priests, populations that serve or worship the deity. Their beliefs, sacraments, methods, teachings, influence.

Merchant powers- Trade is important in any economy. Merchant powers include major merchant groups, pirates, brigands, trade routes, resources, types of goods traded. Goods differ in needs from region to region and governments may even control or restrict trade. Some merchants can have wide influence and holding equal to a city or nation.

Natural powers- These include all natural occuring phenomina that affect the world. They include Magic, geography, monsters, natural/important/rare resources, and weather.

Magic is nothing more than the manipulation of the natural elements or essences of the universe to achieve an effect. However the ability to control magic is not something that can just be done. Conditions are required for any creature to manipulate reality and cause a change. The most common way of this occuring is through the use of focuses & runes.

Focus - A pysical object, idea/thought, series of sounds/words, motions/gestures or grouping of all which helps concentrate a desired effect by a caster into a tangible result. The stronger the focus the more powerful the effect can be. Gods, demigods, and natural spirits are all able to use focuses without runes.

Runes - A rune is the essence of a force within the universe made tangible. Runes are symbols often made by material common to the essence of which magic is preferred to be used. Runes are often inscribed on clothing, armor, weapons, items, and even on living creatures. A rune grants access to that essence of magic. Runes also cause a direct connection with the raw essence of a particular school of magic and the more powerful the rune the more likely side effects on people near the rune will be affected. Runes can be crafted under precise conditions with excessive amounts of focus from a determined person and runes can also occur naturally in the world on their own. Runes are almost entirely made from the use of Iyoncryst (a crystal that naturally absorbs the natural essence of its environment) as a base component however there are many other possible base components that might be used.

This is to start getting personalities out here and start picking at which ones are the best fit for characters.

I think the major groups are as follows.

    Heroes/Heroines
    Villains
    Supporting characters

Right now I think I want to drag the character I created in the BoFRP into this I like the idea of a strong female blacksmith with a strong work ethic and kind heart. I feel it will likely be a minor supporting role probably in one of the first locations we place the lead characters in.

I think that I smell war nearby. In a paladin story it is likely that war is a plot device. With war nearby you have the following useful items in a plot:

Refugees - Nothing like hordes of civilians flee their homes and being forced to live by any means necessary with people who don't normally appreciate them around. Not to forget racism and all the other negative aspects.

Enemies around all the corners - A lot of people on edge due to what is going on around them.

Thieves and Brigands - Fun in all the right places

Slavery - A cultural based item I doubt that free society is up there in all of the fantasy empires.

Famine - War means loss of crops on the front lines. Starving people do desperate things.

Usually that's the case. We could also consider "the stuff of fairy tales" and perhaps satirise them? A classic being the princess stuck in a tower, a witch casting a spell so that her body is half-human, half-pig and the only way to resolve it is by a kiss, etc, etc. Upon discovery, the "saviour" kisses her, in which she turns back into a pig.

    Whoops!

It doesn't have to be as bad or funny (depending on opinion) - in fact, it could be far different. But I have an inkling that this tale doesn't have to just have the conventions of Paladin tales.

The refugees could be interesting. Depending on what races we choose to have, the two companions could possibly bear witness to an ongoing fight for equality - they may only suggest one or two things to the "movement" demonstrators, but have a greater impact on things to come. Depending on what you think, we could link the "Slavery" aspect here, but I'm not sure how. Perhaps the slaves having uprising against an unfair king?

True what we need to push our heads together is what event must they overcome. Since they are heroes of the story we need to figure out that part of the plot. Stopping a war just seems something too cliche' I honestly think these two paladins have something closer to apathy towards the war. So it would need to be some other quest/s for the pair.

It could be something as simple as them hiring on as guards or courriers of something and it just gets more complicated as they go. It could also be some aspect of the war that they fight against on both sides. It could be a bigger problem that they are aware of and working against despite the war going on around them. So, refugees, slaves, soldiers, and other things are just background information that can be manipulated for them to help get to that goal.

Maybe it is to reseal a greater rune that is being unleashed and is secretly affecting the local countries and driving them to war. Something like a rune of rage affecting peoples subconscious. A rune of fire drying up and stopping the primary river from flowing between their borders and causing drought and famine. The next country over has other ways of feeding its people though.

Heck one of the paladins could seek to control the run in that case and the other simply get it out of the way of affecting the natural order of life in the area. One paladin wants to become stronger in order to be famous and be remembered through all time. The other wants to stop the suffering of others though his vow may be something closer to protecting the flows of magic.

Once we pick something to go with as the main plot we can throw in all sorts of side stories and interesting scenerios to the pair getting there.

    The male paladin's past.

He comes from a traditional old britania style place (Think celtic I think) He at the age of 18 fall in love with a woman (too be named later) they decide to be married and go off by themselves to perform a runic ritual to bond them together forever as spouses. They seal their pact to each other and the runes are marked on their flesh they are surrounded in a sphere of light. They travel into the sky and in an instant all parts of the world seem to flash before their eyes in a wonderful sight. Then everything goes horribly wrong the spere crashes to the ground and the young lovers find themselves before a horrible monster (too be named later) the man tell his woman to run and save herself as he moves before the monster to buy her life at the cost of his. However he is overwhelmed and tossed about and beaten on like a toy by the monster. Then just as the monster is about to kill the man and devour him the girl comes back and stands before the monster. She prays to the rune of the pact they make to save her mans life at the cost of her own mortality the rune however manipulates this. The woman vanishes in a flash of light and the man stands their with a weapon (also to be determined) he uses it to slay the beast. The woman turned into a star the man into a paladin. Their immortal oaths to each other binding them to live forever.

Runes come in all shapes and sizes. They are located on physical objects such as lanterns, armor, spoons, pots, urns, weapons. They are located on creatures including humans. In the case of humans more than one rune can be infused into their bodies. Normally runes are located on apendages that are used as part of the focus for the magic that it is related to. Runes interact with one another and opposing runes cannot touch one another in normal circumstances. Here are some of the basic rune types and the magic associated with them. Runes come in different types some are elemental representing the basic components of the world, some are energy related, some are more abstract for example the male paladin bears the rune of love on his body which is a random and chaotic rune that can control him as often as he controls it.

Fire - Controls or creates fire to verying effects. (Examples: A small rune on a finger can be used to create sparks and light simple fireplaces. A body sized rune could be used to create walls of flame from nothing and light an entire home on fire instantly.

Water - Controls the flow of water and can draw it from sources such as rain or moisture in the atmosphere. (Small runes can dampen a cloth. Draw a gallon of water and make it stir within a pot. A large rune could redirect river flows and cause other effects such as whirlpools.)

Wind - Controls the flow of air (Small runes can cause short sharp breezes that can snuff out a candle. Large runes can create tornadoes and cause gales)

Metal - Can control the tensile strength, flexibility, and shape of metal. (Small can harden a blade slightly or bend a hair pin slightly. Large runes can form weapons from iron rods and make them stronger than any nonmagical substance)

Located in the north is a large expanse of feudal counties know as the Queendom of Feiss, The Northern queendom, or Feiss. The country is a society where women rule the nobility and run the society. Men in the country are laborer and soldiers. The country is almost complete made up of humans. Other races are seen as outsiders and as non citizens.

Neighbors: To the west lies the Schattenwald. A large forest that was formerly home to an elven society.

    To the south: TBD

To the north: The Immerwint a large barren area of tundra, ice, and snow fields.

    To the east: TBD

Society: Feiss is a Matriarchal society. The leaders of households are women and men are seen as strong nonthinking members of society. Amongst the nobility is common for male children to be bartered into other noble houses to increase ties between noble houses. Male children must bring a dowery equal to their family's station with them when wed into another household.

Women are the Ruling gender, they are the thinkers, philosophers, tacticians, artists, and are given to the duties requiring the least amount of physical labor. Women of Feiss see thiness as a sign of beauty and will often accept non healthy habits to appear more beautiful than their peers. A woman is always addressed by males when entering an area regardless of their standing (in other words even noblemen must stand if a female servant enters their room).

Men are the working gender. Feiss society believes men were build strong to support and serve the women of their society. Women are less prone to go to war than men and more willing to seek nonviolent solution and compromise leading to their rise in Feiss. Men are warriors and control all aspects of fighting in war however they are always led by female generals and tacticians. The art of war is seen as manly and almost all male members of society train at least part of their life to serve as a soldier. If ever the time of war is called for the men from across the entire country are expected to rise to meet the threat. Not facing your opponent and thinking your way through combat is seen as womanly and illegal for males who would be acting above their station.

Magic: Rune magic is forbidden of all not of the Religious sect or the upper nobility. Since Feiss is almost completely of human population their is no nonrunic magic. Use of runes is feared by the general population as is the use of magic. It is believed all members of society should be able to handle their affairs with their own cleverness for women or physical prowess for men. The major religion in Feiss also marks magic as an aspect of the divine not meant for mortal powers. As such any magic wielders are often hunted as witches by the locals, unless of course they are of the upper nobility or religious sects.

Industry: Feiss has recently begun the use of gunpowder and has some basic steam engine technology in its larger cities. Feiss smelting is considered to be the best in all of the world and is often sought after in trade. Feiss has abundant natural resources in ores and is probably the richest state in minerals. Feiss weapon and armor smithing are considered to be the strongest nonmagical equipment to be had and is highly sought after.

Religion: Broken into several deities. TBD

Summary: The Zaelian empire is a far reaching empire with many subordinate (conquered states) within it. It is the most advanced and powerful empire in the use of magics and in its earlier centuries expanded quickly to acquire new magical influences and resources to conducted and further their research. As it stands currently the empire is at a stand still it has not expanded in nearly a century and has become deeply bureaucratic. The country is so focused on improving the technologies it already has and following its own rules that the entire empire no longer seems capable of creative work or new technology.

Location: The empire expands and influences most of the Eastern continent and has several colonies in the the western continent. Its influence goes even farther than that as most Rune produced goods are from the empire.

Additional info to be added shortly.

“What is right? What is wrong? What makes a path?”

These are the questions which the Paladin Manya has always asked throughout her years, a serious gaze always upon her face as she focuses herself on dedication and necessity. Though patient and not judgemental of others, her sense of justice is unmatched – thus, if she were to say the rare joke or two, it is only natural for others to take it too seriously, based upon her overall nature. She is curious however, to the antics of her companion, which amuse her at the best of times.

Oddly enough, she is in fact very gentle and soft of heart. It is only her quiet demeanour which leaves others to judge her in their own ways, making them believe she is stoic and cold, rather than serious. Encouraging this judgement is perhaps Manya's foreign complexion, for she is a “mingled” - a person of two bloods, belonging to neither. Her skin is a dark shade of the West, but her deep brown eyes shine with the studious glimmer of an Eastern-dweller.

Dressed in what she believes is the “pompous outfit” for a Paladin, Manya chooses a black, hooded cloak to place over her guarded shoulders. On the back of it, there is an interesting mark which is neither of Eastern or Western origin, adding mystery to the girl. Over her back however, is a thin, silver sword – partly for speed and the other is the light handling of the blade. She favours agility – and a shield.

This is solid are you mixing west and east in planet earth styles or are we going for something in Pyra. Just trying to finish getting the image in my head. Also I really probably should start RPing her with you just to get their interactions and bonds down. Let me know what you think cause in chapter three of Xiral I plan on them traveling down the road and literally having the other characters drop into their midst. Let me know what you think.

I was imagining something in Pyra. Like two different continents, so to speak.

Sounds like a good idea to me! ^-^ Let it rip!

Sure thing will get to work on it tonight and tomorrow and see if I can't get to that scene before the end of the night. Thanks for helping me out on this. I will do my best to get you some test scripts of how the two behave. Then you can help vector me in to where she should be at.

She is the captain of the Xiral's Grace she has a fascination with fiction and spends most of her free time reading stories of adventure and romance. It is her most favorite thing until life forces her into one of these adventures. She is also secretly a tactical genius and a decent magister when she is in her element aboard a runecraft (magical vehicle). Her best friend is her second in command Sebastian Flay.

Description: She is thin pale and physically weak from inactivity. Sorry but reading doesn't count as physical exercise. She has dark hair (brunette, purple?, dark red?). Her eyes are emerald (dark green) color. She wears a bright orange vest over a white linen undershirt and gray leather greaves bound at the shin in White leather boots. Both of her arms had the orange tattooed runes (signs of any human who can use magic).

Sebastian Flay is the second in command of the Xiral's Grace. He treats most of life as a game and likes to make it as fun as possible often including practical jokes. He thinks of Claire as a little sister though on rare awkward occasions he finds himself thinking of more than that which often blows up in his face. He enjoys working out and is the toughest person on the ship next to Edna who all fear and respect for good reason.

Description: Sebastian wore a faded version of the baggy orange colored uniform all official Zaelian skymerchant crew. He was a tall proud man who despite a great deal of time on skyships had managed to avoid the normal physical atrophy common among other officers by a strict exercise routine. His face tattooed with an orange rune running over his left blue eye. He had been with Captain Skylark three years and could almost predict what she would say next. (Cheated and copy/pasted)

I am pretty sure he needs eyes and hair. Any suggestions?

Rell is a master swordsman from the Queenlands in the eastern continent. He left for the empire to save the life of his dying sister who was mortally wounded. He has taken on mercenary work in the hope of recovering his sister to her full life again. In this he has a secret motive to use the great power his master seeks to resurrect her.

Description: Rell is of short to medium build and wears leather armor to allow freedom of movement for his favored fighting style which is a fencing style. He wears the brown cloak of the guild he currently serves. He does not have any runes on his body and is purely a master swordsman. His eyes are cold and heartless to most people because since his sister was first hurt he has had little actual joy in life.

Samanthia is Rell's sister. She was a pretty girl in her early life and learned to be a great swordswoman almost as good as her brother. She was prideful and got into what she thought was a friendly duel and was mortally wounded. After killing her attacker Sam's brother tried to have the healers tend to her but they could not save her and magic was forbidden to peasants in the Queenslands. Seeking help he caught a ship to the empire to seek their magister's help however when he reached there his sister was too close to close to the grave for them to help. Not giving up Rell made a deal with a death rune magister who sealed Samanthia's soul to her blade as she died.

Description: In her current form she is a thin bladed rune encrusted cutluss. The death runes she is sealed to make her thirst for blood which is greatly different from the fun loving woman she used to be. When she thirsts the runes on her blade make her glow a dark purple (I think dark purple at least) color.
