Trying to get our setting down. The current system in the Shadowrun Returns Editor is set up to work in the 2050 time frame. I think we should probably work very close to that timeline for a starting place. Link to the timeline in Shadowrun.

Also wondering which city we want to look for. Seattle is the most basic standard starting city for most games and I think would work best since we have some new people to the setting helping us work on the project. However assets are in game to use Berlin as well and we can always try and make our own tile sets to create one of the other cities.

Some options to look at and read up on are below:

    http://shadowrun.wikia.com/wiki/Tokyo
    http://shadowrun.wikia.com/wiki/London
    http://shadowrun.wikia.com/wiki/California_Freestate

Please let me know what you think and we can start fleshing out our niche of the shadows.

I'm partial to Seattle do to the overlapping interest. Just about every AAA Megacorp has an office their and The Renraku arcology makes a good plot point if you want to deal with it during the time of the Deus take over. You also have the semi eternal strife between the Irish and Italian Mobs, the multiple Yakuza groups and the Triads along with multiple minor gangs that are in constant disputes over territory. In addition to it's proximity to the NAN and Califonia free state and it's significant port it's an international travel hub as well. It's also unique in that even the law enforcement is divided with Seattle PD being chronically underpowered and Knight Errant and Lone Star both having contracts with local government for peacekeeping. All in all between the usual disputes between gangs and authority and the laws regarding megacorp owned land Seattle is considered one of the best Runner Havens and is a constant bumbling cauldron of turmoil because of the amount of attention focused on it. The only city that compares is Neo-Hong Kong.

For anyone not familiar with the concept an arcology is essentially what the hive in Resident evil was. The Renraku arcology in Seattle was run mostly by the AI Deus (usually pronounced Day-us) was a partial duplicate of the code that created the self forming AI Morgan. After essentially neutering Deus conscience, and altering the code in significant way they implanted several kill codes which resulted in the AI feeling betrayed.
Around 2059 Deus seized control of the arcology and began experimenting on the nearly 100,000 people trapped inside. Without going into details let's just say that the combined UCAS military and Law enforcement personnel that finally breached the facility will be spending years coping with PTSD and nightmares due to the things they saw. the estimated 1,600 survivors are protected and are predicted to spend several years recovering from physical and mental damages.

Just wanted to start a place to start working out the NPCs for withing the game. Since a lot of the love from any RPG story is how well we can make the place a living breathing world that player believe is real and personally I think the best way to do that is through the characters and making them and there personalities as real as possible.

For Shadowrun characters think about the different kinds of NPCs you like and what about those personalities you liked. Is your character just some person trying to make there way? Someone trying to reset their lives now living on the edges of society? An up and comer willing to walk over anyone in their path so they can make a name for themselves? Maybe he is a lone survivor from a gang that got wiped out and are looking for a fresh start as a fellow beginning runner. Maybe your character runs the coffee shop just because she is the coffee otaku who doesn't like the synthetic stuff and can recite all 100+ specific blends from round the world and wants to share it with others but mostly just stay afloat so she can enjoy it?

I intend to update this with a set character sheet once I figure out the game itself presents stats and things but in the meantime we can get to creating interesting characters and such that will be in our story. Hopefully making the place a really great living breathing world.

    Character Name: Jandice "Dice" Gerhart
    Gender: Male
    Race: Orc
    Occupation: Hustler/Informant

Personality/Background: Jandice is an old street rat all grown up. He spent some his younger years working legitimate jobs that barely made ends meat. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time in 2033 "Lone Star" detectives too lazy to find a real perp gave him a "tuning up" on burglary case. After being forced to confess to the fake crime Dice lost a year in the system. Forced to learn the ropes quickly Dice found that he had a good sense of knowing what was going on and established himself a place as an information broker. Once out the penniless Dice made use of his skills and contacts to develope a nice network his local turf in Seattle. While still out for himself Dice is still the hardworking type who cares about his community and makes the most of his connections by keeping the gangs from putting down too much pressure on the community.

Dice works regularly out of several dive bars in the area keeping an eye on his part of the city. He makes sure that the locals get the most from visitors and keeps an eye out for unssavory types who he can quickly remove and earn a quick bit of nuyen from by selling the troublemakers out to whichever gang is in charge. Dice earns his name by being a fan of games of chance with a specialty in dice games but also willing to play cards or hustle a game of pool to get the measure of new comers. Often he takes payment from those who know him in the form of bets and is willing to give a freebie now and again to someone who beats him.

Quote you would hear from them in a bar/on the street: "You sure you want another go Chummer? Lady luck doesn't seem to be with you tonight and 500 is a lot of nuyen to burn in one night."

Next up is a place for us to build up the community that our story's shadowrunners will be hanging out in. There are tons of fun places we can put the characters. For starts think about where we want their hideout/home to be. What is the restraunt down the street? Where do they grocery shop? Which gang or corporate territory are they in? Where do they get their supplies (Talismonger, Weapons Dealer, Software Salesman)? Where does the character hang out in between jobs? All of these thoughts add up to that living breathing place in the fiction that draws in the players.

For starters we can use the template below.

    Place: Club Penumbra

    Purpose in Story: Meeting spot/hangout

Description: The retro interior style of the club with its moon surface floor and trideo laser effects may not meet everyone's tastes, but it attracts a large mixed crowd of regulars, including shadowrunners, who seem to like it just the way it is, so it still remains to be one of the major hotspots in the city. The music is pretty loud and includes popular dance music and hard rock. The club has small rooms set aside for groups that can be reached by catwalks providing privacy for a price.

Key Personalities: Penumbra is a popular hang out for Deckers taking time out of the matrix and Fixers move through the place almost as quickly as music.

Other: Club Penumbra is located in Central Downtown, right next to the Renraku Arcology, on the northwestern border of the International District. Unless someone inside has paid of the bouncers anyone wanting to get inside can expect to wait in line for a few hours.
