She looked at the girl in shock, not bothering to hide it. "There isn't one time, in all of your life, that you were truly happy? No worries, no fears?

The she-warrior gave a short smirk before nodding faintly, giving a faint shrug.

“Hey… don’t look too surprised, Foxy. My life was just one violent turn from another since I was a child. When I lost my family, so too did I lose the memories – soon enough, they were simply abominations. Not long ago, I lost my true father and my baby sister.”

Her face became stoic, her eyes staring deep into the raging fog of the flames.

“She had my mother’s eyes… though… if you can call it a memory, I recall that my mother was very beautiful. She was once a priestess, I think.”

At that moment, Rislyn wanted nothing more than to take that strange woman, and hold her close. Restraining herself, she simply said, "When all this is over, and we live through it, I hope you will let me buy you a drink. I think I would like to know more about your life, bad as it may have been."

Dain smiled faintly and looked away, saying nothing for a while, before tilting her head and raising her hands to warm them by the fire – a chill from the mountains had turned its head to the little camp.

    ‘I know… no fear.’

‘Do you know what that means…?’

    A dagger.

The wreath fell from her dark hair.

    A breath.

“I won’t paint pictures of tragedy – but I’ll tell you this, Rislyn… I actually don’t regret any of it… if it means meeting people like you and Rath.”

She slowly stood up, brushing the dirt from her skirt, looking downwards.

“Get some rest. I’ll be standing guard. I don’t sleep, anyway.”

Ris nodded, not bothering to argue. She wasn't very tired, and she knew she would probably have nightmares if she did sleep, but when Dain said something, it was easier to just agree. She had learned that fast.

Instead, she laid down, and daydreamed. Of Rhys, of her families home. Of Rath, and their time together. Of what may happen, if she ever saw him again?

Of what she would do if she ever saw Rhys again.

The night passed slowly, neither woman speaking, neither sleeping.

The morning fog drifted soundlessly into their encampment, rolling across the unmoving soil, rock and remnant trees which surrounded the warriors and horses. Dain stood in silence – something had clearly caught her attention and held it in the early hours of the morning. She was stock still – and her violet eyes were narrowed.

    The air was cold.

    Something was coming.

Ad dawn creeped upon them, Rislyn finally gave up on sleeping. She joined Dain at her post, camly watching the sun rise. After nearly an hour of silence, Rislyn spoke. "We take only what we can carry, and hide the rest. We must set the horses free. As we travel up, will o' whisps will descend, and guide us up."

Dain didn’t reply for a while, giving a faint ‘hmm’, her eyebrows furrowing. Something in her gut summoned uncertainty. Her dusky eyes glanced at the girl beside her, as if studying her before looking away, the sun’s light but a gleaming slit on the distant horizon.

    Your turn.

She folded her arms, leaning on the fragments of a tree, looking aside.

‘You make it sound like a fairy tale, Foxy.’

"Hardly a fairy tale, when the wisps will try to lead us over the edge of the mountain, if we arent careful." She returned to their camp, putting things into her pack, and hiding everything she didn't want in a nearby hallow tree. Slinging her pack over her shoulders, she called the horses to her.

"We must leave you behind, my friends. You can not go where we go, not this time. But i lay upon you both a blessing, may you always be safe. She laid a hand on each of their faces, pushing her own natural energy into them. This wasn't magic, this was just her families way with animals.

"You will always know where to find us, Rath and Rhonin, sons of Firemouth. Be safe," she whispered, kissing both of them. She slapped their rumps, and both took off, running southward at a gallop.

"Ready when you are, darlin'," she said to Dain as she looked up the narrow mountain pass.

Dain gave a soft grunt of acknowledgement, wordlessly starting to step towards the path set before them, her footsteps quiet in the foliage of the decimating trees. She said nothing, her responses prepared, lest the half-celestial beside her ever spoke. Often she looked around in curiosity, seeking for the glowing circles and tiny pebbles of laughter emanating from them.

Yet not even a flux from the Nothing. Dain's eyebrows creased with annoyance. This wasn't needed at this point. It wasn't the fear of failure or loss of money which sullied her feelings, but the absence of everything. A moment of curiosity fleeted past a nerve. Though they were alone, Dain didn't dare try speaking the demi-goddess' name out loud. She needed to understand the girl's magick.

'Betheyn.' Her voice was barely a murmur, 'Can you feel anything? Anything change in the Nothing... I can't see.'

Looking around, she could see nothing but shadows, despite her enhanced vision. Everything was lifeless, soulless. Empty. They trudged up the path, increasingly narrow and rocky. There should be life here, insects, small rodents, mountain critters.

"Everything is dead. Silent as a tomb, without even the whisperings of the spirit, no sound but our own footfalls. The spirits themselves are watching us, and waiting." She slid her bag more securely on her shoulder, and dropper her hands, letting her claws grow out. "There is something ahead, something that we can not kill with mortal weapon."

Dain nodded with a grim look, her eyes betraying some uncertainty. She tied her mask around her mouth and nose, glancing at Rislyn as her nails became vicious claws; she eyed the cold glistening which shone against the dim light, before the she-warrior's violet eyes met her companion's, a warning resolute within them.

There was potential – and Dain's voice betrayed some approval.

'I see. Thank you. Let us not show ourselves as offensive just yet – they may be as cautious as ourselves...'

    A frown.

No. It wasn't caution – Rislyn was right. The forest was too quiet. Too... dead.

And Dain couldn't see any fluxes at all.

    'There is fear here.'

She nodded, keeping her hands by her side, claws turned in toward her own body. "All we can do is proceed. With caution. It could be that it is simply the restless dead. Or, it could be a guardian. It would not surprise me if we face challenges on our way."

'Whatever gets you to sleep, Rislyn.'

Dain frowned faintly, resisting the urge to roll the violets of her vision. She trudged onwards, pausing every so often, her eyes narrowing faintly at every sound that touched her ears. The subtlety was starting to annoy her – but there was something worse.

It was suddenly getting unnaturally dark.
